Choosing a belly ring

Belly button jewellery is built around the curved banana barbell: a gently bent 14g bar with a small ball on top and a larger or decorative end below. This is one of our biggest ranges — over four hundred styles — from plain 316L surgical steel bananas from $2.99 through jewelled, dangle and charm designs to titanium, gold PVD-coated steel and sterling-silver-charmed pieces.

Sizing and fit

Navel piercings are done at 14g (1.6 mm) as standard, and that is the gauge of this range. The usual wearable length is about 10 mm; if your piercing is shallow or you have been fitted with a shorter or longer bar before, match what you already wear. Dangle designs hang below the piercing, so they suit healed piercings best — for sport, keep a plain banana handy. The Size & Gauge Guide shows how to measure a curved bar correctly (along the curve, ball to ball), and the Belly Button Piercing Guide covers suitability, healing and when dangles are safe to wear.

Pregnancy and sensitive skin

We stock flexible bioflex and PTFE bananas that bend with you — the usual choice as a bump grows, and a comfortable option for metal-sensitive skin. They can be trimmed and re-balled to length, and the same flexibility makes them popular as low-profile retainers.

Belly ring FAQs

What size is a standard belly ring?

14g (1.6 mm) thickness with roughly a 10 mm wearable length is the standard fit. Measure the bar you wear now if you are unsure — gauge is the thickness of the bar, length is the distance between the balls measured along the curve.

What is the difference between a banana and a belly ring?

Nothing — “banana” is the trade name for the curved barbell shape that belly rings use. Reverse (top-down) designs wear the decorative end above the navel instead of below.

What can I wear during pregnancy?

Flexible PTFE and bioflex bananas are the usual choice: they flex as your shape changes and can be cut to a longer length. If the piercing becomes uncomfortable anyway, talk to your piercer about a retainer or removing the jewellery for the duration.

Are the cheaper fashion designs safe to wear?

Our fashion dangle designs use plated base-metal decoration on the hanging parts, but the bar through the piercing should always be the part you judge — check the product page for the bar material, and keep base-metal decoration out of unhealed piercings. The Materials Guide explains the difference.

My piercing is new — when can I switch to these styles?

Navel piercings heal slowly — often six months or more — so keep the jewellery your piercer fitted until they confirm it is ready. Details on caring for it in the meantime are in our Aftercare Guide.
